Maybe 1 in 5 times when I turn the key the starter does not engage with the flywheel but I can hear it spinning. There is no grinding or anything unpleasant like that and and it always engages on the second try. Is this a. The starter drive gear slides forward when the solenoid is energized. If all looks well there you don't have much choice but pull the flywheel and remove the Bendix. You might try a bit of lube first on the starter drive shaft and try the starter.
